many options exist for funding your fellowship
We have received feedback from past Fellows about resources that worked well in helping them raise funds to participate in our program. Additionally, many Fellows pursue a paid opportunity for the part of the summer when they are not overseas with us. We would encourage you to consider whether any of the following could be a good option for you:
Speak with both the study abroad and financial aid office on campus to see what resources they can provide or point you towards. In addition, consider reaching out to other institutes or centers on your campus that may be dedicated to a particular part of the world or to global culture.
Talk with your support system about the Beacon Fellowship to see what financial support may be available from them. Write letters to your network explaining why you are pursuing this opportunity and what types of support would be helpful to receive from them.
Another good option to use in conjunction with a physical letter, especially for getting donations from people that you reach through Facebook or social media is to use GoFundMe.com or a similar service (FundmyTravel, MightyCause, etc). Check out how Thomas, a 2019 Beacon Fellow, used GoFundMe to raise $2,525 of his $4,000 program fee!
Partner with a local restaurant to host an event where part of the proceeds go towards your trip.
Reach out to local businesses, business professionals or consultants requesting sponsorship of your time abroad.
Apply for a scholarship from a third-party organization! (see list at the bottom for a variety of resources to begin your search)
These are just some of the thousands of scholarships that may be available to you!
